- Petra is mind boggling
So much to see
The hostel that night is quiet, partly because Marseille and I have our own room. I take advantage of this rarity and forego my earplugs, as it’s more comfortable to sleep without them.
Bad decision.
At 5am the muslim calls to prayer go off, and they are longer and louder than any other calls to prayer I’ve heard (and by now I’ve heard A LOT). As usual, they are less than pleasant, and I would like to say more, but I’m trying to be polite and politically correct. It’s a wake up call is worse than a rooster crowing by my head, and in my sleepy state I am enraged and react subconsciously. Marseille tells me a week later with a laugh that was the most livid she’s seen me to date. She said I was lit right up like a Christmas tree. I barely remember.
Despite the bad start to the day, it’s a spectacular one.
The walk starts through a path of massive rocks on either side
The moment we've been waiting (walking?) for...
- The famous treasury is huge and spectacular
“Wow. Unbelievable. Stunning. Amazing. Crazy.” I regurgitate the same adjectives and more over and over as Julian, Marseille and I explore Petra, one of the new 7 wonders of the world. I’ve been looking foward to this part of the trip, and it did not disappoint. In case you’re not familiar with it, it’s where part of “Indiana and the Last Crusade” took place and was filmed.
This was my favorite. A massive structure carved in a mountain!
And just so you understand the scale...can you see me in the picture?
Along with 100 million others, I cast my vote a year or so ago for the new wonders of the world. It is with shame I admit that I didn’t vote for Petra. I’m glad fellow voters weren’t as ignorant as I, because it definitely deserves it’s place as a wonder of the world.
Can you see the itty bitty people?
It’s basically a city of buildings and dwellings carved into stones and rocks. And some of these carvings are incredibly ornate, and many of them are just massive. It’s like 10 Mount Rushmores on steriods. It took us all day to walk through the different areas, and it was all impressive.
I’ll let the pictures do the talking. But if you’re ever in the area, Petra is a must.
(Marseille is a much better photographer then me and one of the pics is hers. You can check out her blog at http://marsmark.blogspot.com/)
The colors and designs in the rocks are incredible

AWESOME! LOVE IT!
Elyssa and I really enjoyed all your pictures, makes us want to go visit these places. Elyssa is really keen on Egypt.
Wonderful….where’s Indie???
Denise—don’t lie—you loved the calls to prayer.
I loved that prayer as much as you loved praying dude on the beach.
I heard those prayers one day when I was talking to
Denise on skype. I asked her, “What is that noise!?” Yup, that’s what it was. I can understand why it would get annoying quite quickly.
